Roberta Barbara (Bobbie) Meisch Bates, 87 years of age, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday September 29, 2018, at her home in Aurora, Illinois.

Roberta was born April 13, 1931, in Aurora, Illinois to the late Caspaer Adolph and Apollonia Rosamunda Meisch. She was the 4th of seven children. She was educated at St. Therese Catholic School and Madonna High School in Aurora, Illinois. After graduation, Roberta professed her vows and served God as a Sister of Mercy (Sr. Mary Rosamond) for 24 years, during which time she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from St. Xavier University in Chicago. She returned to secular life in 1972 and completed her masters’ degree in education from National University. Roberta taught 1st grade and was a reading specialist in the Wheaton Public School District until her retirement.

Roberta married the late Bernard F. Bates in 1978, and they settled in Batavia, Illinois where she joined Holy Cross Church and was an active member of the choir for over 25 years. Roberta was passionate about genealogy and spent countless hours and many years researching her family’s history and passing along this knowledge to others. She loved children and animals, particularly cats, and was an avid gardener, growing and canning her own fruits and vegetables and sharing them with neighbors, friends, and family. She was a loving and caring person with a quick wit and ready smile, a devoted wife, loving sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. In her final days she enjoyed listening to music and having her hand held, laughing and praying with those who visited her, and she always had a smile on her face.

Roberta is survived by her sister, Rosanne Henningson of Naperville, IL, her brother, Thomas Otto (Barbara) Meisch of Fresno, CA, sisters-in-law Dolores (Adolph) Meisch and Connie (John) Meisch, her primary care-givers, niece Melissa and her husband Claudio Mercado, and cousin Marybeth and her husband Wayne Stevens and by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and Sisters of Mercy.
