She was born October 7th, 1929, the beloved daughter of the late Mildred Frazier Tharrington and Herbert M. Tharrington of Nash County, North Carolina. She lived in the cities of Chester and Anderson, South Carolina during her early years. She attended Winthrop College and later graduated from Armstrong State College and Georgia Southern University. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence J. Hayes, Jr., her high school and college sweetheart.
Martha was a retired educator from the Savannah Chatham County School System. An outstanding teacher, she was later an elementary school principal for nineteen years serving at Bloomingdale, Isle of Hope, and Largo Tibet Elementary Schools. During her last days she often spoke of the children and teachers she loved so well.
She was an active member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Jane Shirah Circle, and a former member of the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board. She also served as president of United Methodist Women and was formerly one of the teachers of the Fellowship Sunday School class. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Iota Chapter, a current member of the Huntington Women’s Club, and the Chatham County and Georgia Retired Educators Association.
The family also wants to thank the staff and Hospice Savannah for the excellent care they provided for Martha during her illness.
Remembrances in Martha’s honor can be made to Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, Hospice Savannah, or the Greater Savannah Humane Society.
