Architect who made his name with grand buildings in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, Canada including the provincial Parliament Buildings (1892), the famed Empress Hotel (1908) and other landmark structures. A darling of local society, he was shunned when he left his wife and dared appear in public with his mistress. He returned to England and some years later was murdered by his new wife's dimwitted lover.
