SMITH, WILLIAM

Washington, Rockdale P.O., is a farmer and was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in July 1816, and was a son of James and Eleanor (Kearney) Smith who settled in Washington Twp. in 1827 and cleared and improved the farm on which they resided up to the time of their deaths. Their children were Andrew, Matthew, William, John, Eleanor, and Jane.

William Smith settled on the farm which he now occupies in 1840. He was married in Apr. 1844 to Eliza J. Bond, a resident of this township. They have had 11 children: Eleanor J., Mary (deceased), Nancy H. (deceased), James B., Sarah, Andrew, Eliza A., Matthew L., Hattie A., John (deceased), and John H.

William, the third son, was born in Ballybogan, county of Donegal, Ireland, in July of 1816, and came with his parents to America in 1822. After he came to the Beechwoods he worked with his father and brothers some, but setting restless and discontented in the back woods he went back to the iron works for a while. He soon returned however. A farm was purchased and he began to improve it. There he lived until his decease. On April 11th, 1844, he married Eliza Bond. Eleven children were born to them, seven of whom are living at the time of this writing, viz: Eleanor Jane, James Bond, Sarah Kearney, William Andrew, Matthew Logan, Martha, and John Howard. Nancy L. died July 24th, 1856. Mary Esther died July 5th, 1868, and Elizabeth Ann died March 24th, 1888. One died in infancy. His wife died November l5th, 1881. He served many years as a ruling elder in the Beechwoods Presbyterian Church, and died April 11th, 1903, in his 87th year. Husband and wife are buried in Beechwoods Cemetery.
