Dennis Countryman, a farmer and stock raiser of Section 31, Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1841, son of Peter and Margaret (Nicholas) Countryman, the former of Canada, and the latter of Maine. Dennis passed away in 1926. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Ida County, Battle Creek, Iowa.

When a young man, Peter Countryman (the father) moved to Buffalo, N.Y., was there married, afterward engaged in milling in Ohio, and in 1845 moved to Rock County, Wisconsin. He built a mill at Janesville, on Rock River, also purchased and improved government claims in that county, in 1854 located and erected a mill at Wadena, Fayette County, Iowa, later built a gristmill, and engaged in milling there until 1880.

In that year, Peter moved to Kansas, later returned to Fayette County, and in the spring of 1881, started overland to California. He drove 4 yoke of oxen, was 6 months in route, spent one winter in that state, and then returned to Washoe City, Nevada, engaging in quartz milling.

In 1865, Mr. Countryman, the father, returned to Linn County, Iowa, later went to Davis County, Iowa where he died in 1872. Dennis' mother departed this life in Woodbury County, Iowa, in 1888, and both parents were buried in Linn County, Iowa. They were the parents of 8 children, Horace (excellent millwright of Stillwater, Montana); Alexander (married and residing in Stillwater, Montana); Eli (deceased in CA.); Lewis (married and resides in OK.); John (died in CA. in winter of 1861); George (deceased in CA., 1861); Dennis, and A. J. (married residing in Woodbury County, Iowa).

Dennis Countryman was reared and educated in Rock County, Wisconsin. After returning with his parents from California, he began farming for himself in Linn County, Iowa, and in 1875 came to Ida County, Iowa, having been the first settler in Grant Township (once had been a part of Maple Township, Ida County, Iowa). He bought 65 acres of raw land on the West Soldier River, which he at once began improving, erected a small shanty, and after breaking 20 acres, returned to Linn County for his family.

Dennis then owned 292 acres of well cultivated land, had a good two-story residence, 28 by 28 feet, erected in 1890, and about 3 acres of this place was devoted to a grove and orchard. He raised draft horses, also had a fine carriage team which took the first premium at the Ida County Fair in 1891.

Dennis Countryman was married in Linn County, Iowa, to Lydia Usher, a native of that county, and a daughter of Hiram and Lucinda (Williams) Usher, natives of Ohio. In 1842, they came to Linn County where they were among the first settlers.

Dennis and Lydia had 7 children, Ida M. (wife of A. J. Menter) of Grant Township; Rosa (deceased at 13 yrs.);
C. C. (attending college in Nebraska); Sylvia, Hiram (deceased at age of 5); Lawrence, and Pearl.
