OBITUARY
Late Mr. Dave McCartney
Sir. Dave McCartney, of Harris-st., Cessnock, died suddenly at his residence on December 7.
Few citizens of the district were more favourably known than Mr. McCartney, who was resident here for the past 40 years. He was an authority on soccer, having been a professional player for 10 years in England prior to coming to Australia.
On several occasions he made tours of the Continent and played in matches against the best of teams in Germany, and Vienna and many other large cities. Many and varied were the anecdotes he related of his experiences in this province.
The late Mr. McCartney was associated with the Aberdare South Colliery when it was first opened and was overseer shiftman until the closing down of this large mine. He was also successful in the mine deputies examinations. His practical knowledge of mining was extensive. He retired about 10 years ago.
His quiet and unassuming manner won for him numerous friends, and his undoubted sincerity was his out standing attribute. His death came without warning at the age of 75 and his friends were shocked at the news, for his health, appeared unimpaired. He was possessed of an excellent physique and maintained this to the end.
He leaves a widow and one daughter, Mrs, F. C. Biggers, of Sydney.
Mrs. McCartney has taken up permanent residence with her daughter.
