The Battle of Olustee is described in a letter of a fellow soldier and he mentions Charles Nelson as possibly missing and "supposed to have been captured by the enemy." [Letter to the editor of the Burlington Free Press, March 22, 1864 from Jacksonville, Florida, in "Vermont African Americans: Letters of Louden S. Langley" as quoted in Elise A. Guyette, Discovering Black Vermont (2010), p. 128]

Gravesite Details Soldiers who died in the Battle of Olustee were buried in a common grave which was later found to have been dug up and bones scattered. They were reburied and is now Olustee Battlefield State Historic Site
