Dr. William A. Spencer passed away peacefully from complications of pneumonia on August 30, 2018 at his Otterbein residence in Maineville, Ohio with his wife of 63 years by his side.

He was the beloved husband of Janice (Van Dyke) Spencer; father of Lynn and her husband Gregory Davis, David Spencer and his partner David Roberts, and Kathryn and her husband Gerald F. Lucey, and grandfather of Ryan Davis, Kaitlyn Lucey, Jordan Davis, and Gerald Lucey.

He was born on March 16, 1931 to Harvey and Eva (Force) Spencer and is survived by his younger sister Janet and her husband Marvin Konyha.

“Bill” grew up in tiny Columbiaville, Michigan, north of Detroit in the thumb of the “mitten.” He discovered a gift for the flute, trained at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Summer Music Camp, and continued to play up to the last months of his life. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating from the U of M School of Dentistry. It was there that he met Janice.

After dental school, he accepted a commission in the Navy and was stationed in Oakland, California. Following the Navy years, and after the birth of their first daughter, the Spencers returned to Michigan to raise their family. Bill set up his general dental practice of 35 years in Kalamazoo and was recognized with the Edgar A. Honey Award by the Kalamazoo Valley Dental Society.

Outside the office, he enjoyed classical music, reading, snow skiing, and flower gardening. Whether jaunting up to their chalet outside Traverse City, or on longer vacations, with frequent road-side picnic stops, the family enjoyed travel. Bill and Jan retired to Fearrington, North Carolina where they had season tickets to the symphony, participated in lifelong learning courses, and cared for Jan’s mother, Janette Van Dyke.

Bill became an avid runner for several years. He took up cooking and supported Jan’s medical needs as they moved back to the Midwest to be near family. Bill was hilarious and fun-loving, a Jeopardy wiz, and amateur poet.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Norman Chapel located inside Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Ave, Cincinnati, 45232. Visitation begins at 1:00pm with funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
