Walter Herbert Jones, 87, died Thursday at Magnolia Manor.
The memorial service will be held at Edgewood Presbyterian Church, 3617 Macon Road, Columbus, on Sunday, November 1, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George Haugen officiating.
Mr. Jones was born on October 18th, 1928, in Manassas, Ga., to Walter E. and Betty Jones. The first Eagle Scout in Bulloch County, he attained the Order of the Arrow, scouting's national honor society. Upon graduation from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga., he entered the Army in 1951. Following a tour in Germany, he returned to school at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, where he received a master of art degree in 1955. He taught in North Carolina and Alabama and then began a teaching career with the Fort Benning Post Dependent Schools that spanned 25 years.
Herb was an active member and ordained elder of Edgewood Presbyterian Church and built the Easter cross, which is still used today. He was a member of the Columbus Museum, the Columbus Historic Foundation and the Fort Benning Retired Teachers organization.
Herb enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking, reading poetry and telling jokes. Over the years, he was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts, Callaway Gardens, the National Ataxia Foundation and the PTAs of Wynnton Elementary School and Columbus High School, and also made wooden toys for Toys for Tots. Herb and his wife enjoyed traveling in both the USA and Europe. In his later days, Herb was fortunate enough to live at Magnolia Manor Assisted Living and to know their wonderful staff, and to be in the care of Gentiva Hospice.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Miranda Story Jones of Columbus; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Fontaine and Frank Briscoe of Atlanta; two sisters, Sara Betty Cook of Statesboro, Ga., and Evelyn (Elmer) Akin of Marietta, Ga.; a niece, Jana (Tom) Elder of Canton, Ga.; and two nephews, Kevin Cook of Statesboro, Ga., and Jeff (Mary Ann) Akin of Raleigh, N.C. In addition, James and Debra Johnson of Columbus, children, Kyle Johnson and Kendall (Jong) Kim; and grandchildren, Kensleigh and Mikah Kim of Suwanee, Ga., should be considered family.
