He was a son of Purity Rogers and Guilford Uriah Hatley and the husband of Elizabeth Sides. Uriah and Elizabeth were married on 29 Apr 1851 in Stanly Co, North Carolina. Their known children were Daniel, John Wesley, Sarah Elizabeth and Guilford Uriah II.

Uriah was Conscripted (drafted) into Co F, 5th Regiment NC Troops and died on a march from Maryland. Widow E Hatley filed for a claim of a deceased Confederate soldier on 4 Mar 1863. In 1896, a newspaper article was printed indicating Uriah did not have a headstone. THe price of purchasing a headstone was $3.50. Per a relative, his body was later brought back to Salisbury, NC.
