Among the dead are 824 soldiers, 161 civilians, 2 civilian women, 1 gunboat crewman, & 1 identified only as a "conscript," & 116 not identified as soldier or civilian. Only 15 Confederates are unknown, most of these having been originally buried on Quarantine Island. Erected by the Jefferson Barracks Civil War Historical Association, Missouri Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, & the Missouri Society Military Order of the Stars & Bars. Dedicated May 2, 1988. The words of the inscription were written in the postwar years by First Sergeant Berry Greenwood Benson of the 1st South Caroline Battalion of Sharpshooters.
