Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 1st Missouri (Union) Volunteer Infantry, then as Major, and commander of the 1st Missouri Volunteer Light Artillery, before finally as Colonel and commander of the 29th Missouri (Union) Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at Donelson and Shiloh".
