Jacob Vagt was a farmer in the Camp Independence area and was famous for getting things to grow in bad soil conditions. Jacob and Henrietta Vagt were living near Camp Independence when the great earthquake of 1872 struck. They both were buried in rubble from their collapsed house but survived by breathing air thru a hole in the debris made by a spoon but their baby daughter Meta died. There is no grave marker for her but she is most likely buried with her parents.
