Myra Jean (Saxton) Stevens, daughter of Vernon and Anna Pearl (Buck) Saxton was born east of Vici, OK. on March 23, 1936. She passed from this life in Woodward, OK. on September 23, 2018 at the age of 82 ½ years.
A Vici girl all her life, Myra attended grade school and high school at Vici Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1954. While attending high school she worked at the local phone company. She was employed at the Vici Farmers Co-op when she met the love of her life, James A. (Jim) Stevens. On November 14, 1959, they were united in marriage at the Vici First Christian Church. They established their home in Vici and were blessed with one son, Bruce Alan and one daughter, Brenda Linn. After the birth of her two children Myra worked at the lunch room at Vici Public School and as a substitute school teacher. Later she worked the night shift at the Vici Nursing home to enable her to be at home when her children were home. In 1971 Jim and Myra began Stevens Farm & Ranch which later became a Western Auto store. That same year, Jim became a tag agent for the State of Oklahoma. If Jim was unable to work because of illness, Myra would fill in at the store and even type the tags and titles on the typewriter.
On April 1, 1975 she was elected to the office of Town Treasurer for the town of Vici and on December 14, 1979 she became the Town Clerk, a position she held until 2015. Myra cared deeply for the town and did many extra duties that were not required, such as calling business owners and residence owners when water was going to be turned off. She would call and remind customers on the final day their bill was due preventing their service from being shut off. She also contacted the local churches or church members to help those she knew could not afford to pay their bill. She received numerous awards from the Oklahoma Municipal League Ass’n. during her years of service.
Myra made her commitment of Faith in Christ, was baptized and became a member of the Vici First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.
In 1983 a highlight in Jim and Myra’s marriage was the purchase of 80 acres of pasture and hay meadow where Jim had grown up.
She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister and public servant. Her special interests included reading, gardening, shopping and caring for her dog, Maya. Visits from her grand nephews, Chisum and Colsten Weber were very dear to her. Family trips to Branson, MO. were most enjoyable and many happy memories were made.
Myra was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Stevens in 1983, her parents, Vernon and Anna Pearl Saxton, her brother, Foster Saxton and brother-in-law Merritt Hunter. Cherishing her memory are her children, Bruce Stevens and Brenda Stevens, both of Vici, OK. and her sister Beth Hunter of Woodward, OK. Several nieces and nephews, long time friend and co-worker, Mike James, other relatives and a host of friends.
