Edmund Cieslak II, 76, joined his son in heaven on September 21, 2018, just four short months after Robert arrived there. Just like Bobby, he is walking healthy and whole, no more Multiple Sclerosis to ravage his body.
Born legally blind on December 1, 1941, he was fierce in facing his vision challenges head-on throughout his life. Dad loved growing up and living in Union City. He was proud to be a member of Union City High School's class of 1960 and often talked of his classmates and times there. He worked at the Livestock Auction, MFG, Cherry Hill and Erie Crawford Co-Op. When MS took away his ability to work and eventually walk, Ed invested his efforts into volunteering in many capacities including serving as Councilman on the Union City Borough Council, the Union City Juvenile Diversion Program, and the Manley Heights Board, among others. Ed was a lifelong member of the Union City Volunteer Fire Department having served as a firefighter in his younger years. He especially enjoyed serving as volunteer Curator of the Union City Museum for several years creating the popular "Peek at the Past" which has been published monthly for over 25 years and a database of local vital records. He was named the Union City's Lion's Club Citizen of the Year for 1995 and won the local Community Star Award and Jefferson Medal in 1996 for outstanding efforts in community service.
In addition to volunteering, Ed enjoyed good conversation around a local restaurant table (think Buffalo Club!), gardening, bowling, and until his health wouldn't allow him, always had a project of some kind going. Dad lived with a determined, 'can-do' attitude, never letting his disabilities become an excuse: disabled NOT unable.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eloise Higley Cieslak; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Eric Johnson; grandson, Jay; sister, Karen Reagle; brothers-in-law, Robert Higley (Mary), Larry Higley, and Duane Higley (Shirley) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Cieslak; his parents, Edmund Cieslak, Helen Smith Kusiak; sisters/brothers-in-law, Marlene Higley Wright, Pete and Carolyn Higley Baideme, Carlton "Audie" Higley, David Higley.
Family and friends are welcome to call on Tuesday, September 25, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 p.m. at Warren-Glenn Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 62 S. Main St., Union City, with a service to follow at 7 p.m., to celebrate Ed's life, with Eric Johnson officiating.
Please join us as shared sorrow is much easier to bear, and shared joy is multiplied. A graveside service will be held at a later time.
Private burial will take place at Rosehill Cemetery, Spartansburg, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage a possible donation to the Union City Historical Society P.O. Box 321, Union City, PA 16438, and maybe consider carving out some time to stop in and see what treasures are housed there!
Dad leaves a legacy not only for his family, but for Union City as well. We are forever grateful.
Please take a moment to share a memory or condolence on Ed's Book of Memories online at www.WarrenFH.com.
