Raised on a farm in Shively, she met Rodney Whitaker on a tennis court in Louisville where he was a student at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. They married in 1945 and were married 59 years when Dr. Whitaker died at the age of 85 in 2007.
She worked as a bookkeeper in Louisville before joining her husband at his Shelbyville dental practice at 11th and Washington for 36 years before he retired in 1982. She was a member of a bridge club for 60-plus years, often playing in the courtyard of Science Hill Inn. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Caryatid Book Club for 60-plus years.
The Whitakers made their home at 1322 Walnut Street in Shelbyville and also owned a cabin with nine other couples at Strohmeier Fish Camp on the Kentucky River for countless years that generated countless memories. Mrs. Whitaker’s claim to fame was skiing from Strohmeier to the #4 Lock on the river… a distance of 15 miles.
Mrs. Whitaker is survived by her children: Rod Jr. and Mark, both of Frankfort; Mary Anne Sala (Mike) of Reno, Nev., and Scott of Shelbyville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren with a tenth on the way.
Private graveside services were conducted at Grove Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 629 Main Street, Shelbyville KY 40065.
Shannon Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
