James “Bud” Bottoms was a native Californian who lived in Santa Barbara by the sea where he had spent his life swimming and diving. His art education began at Jefferson Machamer School of Art in Santa Monica from 1947-48 and continued at the University of California-Santa Barbara from 1948-52. He worked for many years as an art director for GE’s think tank TEMPO. After a powerful dream he had in 1978 of a woman with a dolphin, he was inspired to sculpt and to commit his life to marine mammal awareness and protection.
