Catherine Avery was born in Brooklyn NY, the eldest of six known surviving children born to Thomas Nash Avery and Eliza J. Carroll. (Two of her siblings, Thomas and George, died young.)

She married Charles Carman of Dutchess County, NY in 1877 and would have 3 known children, born in Fishkill. They were:

* Mary Grace Carman (1879-1963)
* Elizabeth A. Carman (1880-1948), Mrs. Walter Vincent Patton
* Anna Margaret Carman (1888-1919), Mrs. Augustus R. White

She and her family moved to Matawan around 1900 when her husband joined her brother at the Cliffwood Brick Company.

Two of her daughters are known to be buried here, and it is believed the eldest, Mary Grace Carman, who was the last surviving member of this family, is also interred here, but confirming records were not located.

Her obituary appeared in the Dec 26, 1930 edition of the Matawan Journal:

Mrs. Catherine Avery Carman, wife of Charles Carman, died suddenly this morning from a cerebral hemorrhage. For a short time she had been suffering from neuralgia, but Wednesday she was about the house as usual preparing for Christmas dinner. At noon she decided to rest a while before finishing her work, but she gradually grew worse.

Mrs. Carman was the daughter of the late Thomas N. and Eliza Avery. She was born in Brooklyn 71 years ago in November. In 1900 she and Mr. Carman came to Matawan from Peekskill to make their home. They were married 52 years ago last October. Mrs. Carman's house was a home where a warm welcome was always ready for the casual or frequent visitor. She loved flowers and spent her days doing things for other people, yet always most appreciative for any small thing done for her. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Matawan Women's Club.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters - M. Grace Carman, who lives at home; and Eliza, wife of Walter Patton; and a sister, Mrs. Frank M. Dain of Peekskill, NY. Services held from the home Monday with interment in the family vault at Rose Hill Cemetery.
