Alva Smith was a native of Illinois and later moved to Arkansas where he met and married Pearl Rollison. They had one son, Robert Thaddeus Smith. Alva and Pearl moved to California after their marriage on June 17, 1917. Alva was in charge of the Newton & Harding Feed & Fuel Company until 1927 and later was a custodian for the Corona Unified School District for 26 years. In his early days in Corona he helped remove the top story of the old Lincoln School building. He also worked at citrus packing houses and at a match company's saw mill for a time. After retirement he helped run the family's florist business - Smith Florist - in Corona.
