Marlene was born the fourth child in a family of six to Esther Cecelia (Jernberg) and Herman Ralph Harter in a little house on Missouri Avenue in Pierre, South Dakota on August 29, 1931.
She attended grade school in Pierre. She then spent a few years in California, later returning to Pierre where she graduated from Pierre High School in 1949.
On September 25, 1950, Marlene married Kenneth (Kenny) Stewart. They made their home on the Stewart family farm northeast of Pierre where she busied herself with various things around the farm including making sure the farm help was well fed, and of course, raising their six children. She fondly remembers all the good times they shared with the neighborhood farm families.
In 1972, they moved to Pierre and finally settled in a house along the golf course, where, they enjoyed their last years together until Kenny died in 2000. She remained there until the Missouri River flooded her home in 2011, when she then relocated to her “retirement” townhome. Marlene spent her time watching her family grow in age and numbers while she actively enjoyed bowling, golfing and cards with her “Bridge Ladies”.
