United States Army Officer, Author. The son of Civil War Union General George Sears Greene, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1870. He served as United States military attaché in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 1877 to 1879, taking part in Russia's war with Turkey, fighting at Schipka, Plevnia, Sophia, and Phillipopolis and receiving numerous awards from the Czar. Greene resigned in 1886 and was employed as an engineer. In 1898 he returned to the Army for the Spanish American War as a member of the 71st New York Regiment, soon receiving promotion to Colonel and commander of the 7th New York. He was promoted to Brigadier General in May 1898 and Major General and commander of the 2nd Division in August. He resigned in 1899 and was appointed Chairman of the New York Canal Commission. In 1900 he was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention, also serving as Chairman of the New York State Republican Committee. From 1903 to 1904 Greene was New York City Police Commissioner. He also served as President of the Niagara-Lockport and Ontario Power Company. Greene was an author and among his works are "The Russian Army and its Campaigns In Turkey," "Army Life in Russia," "The Mississippi Campaigns of the Civil War," "Life of Nathaniel Greene," "The Revolutionary War and the Military Policy of the US," "The Present Military Situation in the US," and "Our First Year in the Great War."
