Prime Minister of Ukraine. He served as the 3rd Prime Minister of Ukraine from June 16, 1994 to March 6, 1995. He graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute with a degree in electrical engineering in 1951. After graduation, he worked as an engineer at the Novokramatorsk Machining Plant and rose to become the head of the technical department, the head of the mechanical shop and then the deputy chief engineer. In 1971, he was awarded a doctorate in technical science with his thesis concerning the fatigue strength of carbon steel used to manufacture ship propellers at the plant. During this time, he was also a member of the Ukrainian Communist Party and during the 1970s and 1980s, rose through its party hierarchy. In 1987, he became the chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and held this post until October of 1990 when he forced to resign. In June of 1994, he was appointed prime minister of a now independent Ukraine by President Leonid Kuchma and served in this position until disagreements with Kuchma forced him out of office a year later.
