Janet Recio Hayes

Janet Recio Hayes, a fifth-generation Key Wester born Sept. 27, 1942, died Sept. 18, 2018 following a long illness.

Janet was the daughter of Dr. John B. Hayes and Ida Kerr Hayes, deceased. Janet's maternal great-grandfather was William Kerr, the architect of the Convent of Mary Immaculate, the Customs House and the First National Bank Building. Her paternal great-grandfather was Carlos Recio, a influential businessman and civic leader in Key West during the late 1800s. He was also a close friend of Jose Marti and instrumental in financing the Cuban Revolution during that period. Like her ancestors, Janet was an active and involved member of her community serving on the boards of AIDS Help, HARC, Key West Art & Historical Society and Old Island Restoration.

Janet was passionate about travel and culture. She consistently sought to expand her own knowledge and was an avid reader. She attended Hood College, Barry University and received her bachelor's degree in Historical Preservation from Union College.

Janet was employed in her early years by the family-owned Key West Citizen, followed by many years with the Monroe County School Board as the public relations spokesperson and in other capacities of assistance to the superintendents.

Without question Janet's great love was her family. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Stephanie Williams, her pride and joy, grandson Christopher Williams(Carolina), her brother, Dr. Alex Hayes (Tina), nieces Jennifer Sparks (Gary) and Ashley Hayes and a large extended family.

Those close to Janet will always remember her strength and incredible will to survive.

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Dean-Lopez Funeral Home, 418 Simonton St., Key West. The Dean-Lopez Funeral Home is entrusted with all funeral arrangements.
