Phyllis Elaine (Chaney) Ellis, 86, passed away, unexpectedly, on Monday, 17 September 2018 in Twin Falls, Idaho, in the company of her daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, Paul. Phyllis had fallen and broken her hip just two days earlier, on Saturday, 15 September, while attending an American Baptist Women’s Retreat, undergoing emergency surgery and, subsequently, suffering a heart attack.

Phyllis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on Sunday, 21 June 1936 to Paul and Harriett Chaney.

Phillys was living in Mariemont, Hamilton County, Ohio, when she met the love of her life, John L. Ellis. She wrote, "One of the boys living on my street was John Ellis and I walked past his house going to school. I later learned that he watched for me out a window of his house till I got close; then, he just 'happened' to come out the door as I was going by. He was my first date." John was 16 years old then; and Phyllis was 15.

Following her graduation from Mariemont High, Phyllis then attended the University of Cincinnati. She and John were married on Saturday, 10 August 1957 in Mariemont, Ohio; they were happily married for sixty years when John passed away seven-and-a-half months ago, on 3 February 2018.

Immediately after their marriage, the couple moved to California, where their children, Ann Elaine, John Bernie and Nancy Lynn, were born. Mom stayed home until Nancy was in kindergarten; then, she worked at various secretarial jobs. Mom also dutifully and gracefully served alongside John, as pastor's wife; she always supported and helped him in his church duties.

Her greatest joy came from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with our family and we all loved her so much!

She was also active in many American Baptist Women’s groups, served on several boards and committees there and enjoyed the fellowship of other Christian women. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Buhl at the time of her death.

Mom's favorite hobbies were doing jigsaws and crossword puzzles. She was happiest working her jigsaw puzzles when she convinced someone else to sit and work them with her. Lilacs were her favorite flowers: she had beautiful lilac bushes in her backyard and enjoyed sharing freshly-cut bouquets of them.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; her parents and their daughter, Ann Ellis-Stone, all of whom we know greeted her, happily, as she arrived in Heaven. Mom is survived by children, Johnny (Robin) Ellis and Nancy (Paul) Bowman; grandchildren, Matthew (Jolene) Bowman; Ryan (Amanda Adamson) Bowman and Sydney Ann Ellis; as well as great-grandchildren, McCauley Gieber, Abbi Bowman and Donovan Adamson; and was looking forward to the birth of great-grandson, Owen, who had not yet arrived when his great-grandmother passed.

There are no words to describe the hole that Mom has left in her family. She was gracious, kind and a loving woman; a true example of a Christian woman. Her faith was strong and she truly loved the Lord. We miss you like crazy, Mom, and know we will see you again.
