Jack Lowell Woods
July 19, 1926-September 17, 2018

In the early morning of Sept. 17, 2018 death did not extinguish the light which is Jack Lowell Woods, it just put out the lamp because the dawn had come.

It took all of 92 years to contain Jack's incredible life. Born to goodly parents, Francis Woods and Lavon Greenwell, Jack enjoyed an idyllic childhood in Ogden. His days were spent hypnotizing his friends into doing his chores, running errands for his beloved Grandma Greenwell, whipping the Ogden High ROTC into shape and serving in the old Ogden 10th Ward. Through his life he served in and magnified many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jack is a proud graduate of the Ogden High class of 1944 and always told us to tip our hats as we pass his alma mater. For the past 74 years he organized and spearheaded his class reunion.

Jack served honorably in the Army Air Corps during WWII flying in the B-17, his much-loved Gravel Gerty, B-24 and B-29. Jack desired to enlist before his 18th birthday but his mother said absolutely not. He told her, “If I miss this war I will never forgive you.”

After the war he married his one true girl, Marilyn Shurtliff, on September 3, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they made a home for their family in Ogden. He began his career selling genuine lizagator and kangarooster shoes. After earning his chemical engineering degree from the University of Washington Jack enjoyed a very successful career at Hill Air Force Base, retiring as the Deputy Chief of Engineering. Following his retirement from HAFB he went straight to work full-time as a consulting engineer at Nova Color Inc. Jack continued to go to work all day everyday as recently as a month ago and wouldn't have had it any other way. He was most comfortable in his lab or working on patents of which he had dozens, his latest one completed just weeks ago. For the past 25 years he served on the Board of Directors of the HAFB Aerospace Museum.

Among other important lessons, he has taught us never to eat polar bear liver, a hat should be referred to as a lid and Boogie Woogie makes for the best prelude music. However, the most important thing he shared with us was his testimony of the Book of Mormon and his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and the power of the Atonement.

Jack is survived by his four children Craig (Renae) Woods, Rick (Tess) Woods, Wendy Woods and David Woods. He always said he was blessed with five granddaughters Bekah or Rivkah (Marc) Clements, Danna (Brennen) Peterson, Annie (Clark) Broadbent, McKayla (Garrett) Gardner and Megan Woods. Jack will be sorely missed by his five adoring great-grandchildren, Anderson, Parker, Little Jack, Winn and Luke. He is also survived by his brother Don Woods, a very special nephew, Jeff James, as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marilyn and his two sisters, Joan Woods and Carol Kap.

A viewing will be held Friday Sept. 21 from 6-8 pm. at the Lorin Farr 3rd ward chapel, 1517 E 1300 S in Ogden. Funeral services for Gentleman Jack will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, also at the chapel, at 11:00 am with a viewing prior from 10:00-10:45 am.

Arrangements entrusted to Myers Ogden Mortuary.
