Adult Film Star. She was considered one of the best of the pioneer adult film actresses. She grew up in the small community of Williamsport, Pennsylvania and graduated from the local high school there in 1966. While in high school, she was active in the class committee, the play committee, student newspaper, library assistant, swim club, bowling, chorus, Hi-Tri, and Future Nurses. When she graduated from high school, her intention was to attend nursing school, but that summer, she went to stay with a girlfriend in Greenwich Village, New York City, and ended up staying and working in a leather craft shop for a year. The next summer, she returned to Williamsport, and attended the local Lycoming College in 1967-68, majoring in Psychology. There she met John Sanderson, a photographer, while attending college and married him in 1968. Together they moved to New York City in late 1968 and she attended New York University part time. She began her adult film career under the name of Tina Russell in 1970, along with her husband. She is one of the best known and most popular of the pre-Linda Lovelace era adult film actresses. In 1973, she wrote her autobiography, entitled "Porno Star" (1973), but it had only minor sales. Some of her more significant films include "Dark Dreams" (1971), in which she plays a newlywed virgin bride that gets trapped in a haunted house with her groom husband, "The Whistle Blowers" (1972), and "Campus Girl" (1972). She was cast in the film "Deep Throat, Part II" (1974), playing the dual roles of Bonnie Smiley and Aunt Juliet, roles that again played on the fame and popularity of adult film actress Linda Lovelace, who was making headline news at the time. Her 1976 film, "Presidential Peepers," was a thinly disguised parody of President Richard M. Nixon. Her last film was "Pleasure Motel" (1980), although outtakes and cut footage from her earlier films have been used in several other adult films made after her death. In 1981, while visiting her brother in San Diego, California, she and her friend Suzanne were driving to Los Angeles when she collapsed and quit breathing, and was hospitalized in Vista, California, where she died from a combination of Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Pancreatitis, Renal Failure and Alcoholic Liver Disease. Although an autopsy was not performed, doctors did perform an exploratory laparotomy in an attempt to save her life. Her remains were cremated and she was buried in the Resurrection Cemetery in Montoursville, Pennsylvania where her parents are also buried.
