BAIRD HELEN LOUISE BAIRD (Age 89) Of Woodbridge and Alexandria, Virginia, died peacefully Saturday, January 16, 2010, in her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born Oct. 22, 1920, at Bloomington, IL, a daughter of Harry and Jennie Hammitt Bayless. She married Ralph Owen Baird, Jr., February 13, 1943, and celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary just prior to his passing February 27, 1993. They lived in Bloomington; St. Louis; Indianapolis; Cincinnati, Wayne, N.J.; Annandale; and Plant City, FL.

Mrs. Baird was first and foremost a mother and homemaker, who had six children, and was a second mother to foreign students and countless others. A leader in her church and community, she was PTA President, an elder in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Florida, and a member of the Little River United Church of Christ in Annandale. She had many talents, sang in the choir, and performed in dramatic presentations.

After graduating from Illinois State Normal University, she taught home economics; then later in life, served for years as activities director at Leewood Nursing Home. Survivors include six children, Judith Russell (Tom) of Alexandria; Sandra Burnett (Ralph) of Plant City, FL; Jennifer Mohl (Richard) of Colorado Springs, CO; Peg Branvold (Dwight) of Gilroy, CA; R.O. (Skip) Baird (Emily) of Woodbridge; Scott Baird (Sherri) of San Ramon, CA; 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
