EARLY BROWNS PLAYER DIES IN CANTON LINDELL LEE HOUSTON GOT LATE START IN GAME, BUT BECAME ALL-AMERICAN

Akron Beacon Journal (OH) - Saturday, September 9, 1995

Lindell Lee Houston, one of the original players for the first Cleveland Browns team, died yesterday morning at his home in Canton.

He was 74.

Houston -- who was born in Carbondale, Ill., and was said to have never seen a football game until his family moved to Massillon in his junior year of high school -- was introduced to the sport by then-Massillon football coach Paul Brown. He later followed Brown to Ohio State University, where he became an All-American as a junior in 1942.

He served in the Army during World War II; after his discharge, he became a charter member of the Browns.

At the time of his retirement from football in 1953, Brown said: "Lin had the finest technique of any internal lineman that ever played for me."

After his years in football, Houston was employed by Sharon Steel, where he retired as sales manager.

Houston, who was a resident of Canton for the past 40 years, was a member of Community Christian Church, past president and member of the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, Alliance Country Club, Massillon Hall of Champions, Summit County Hall of Fame, Ohio State University Hall of Fame, North Canton Sideliners Club, and the North Canton Elks.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ednamae; two daughters, Linda Tvorik of Norwalk and Cynthia Crile of St. Louis; two sons, Roger of Houston and Michael of North Canton; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Sechler of DeLand, Fla.; and four brothers, Howard of Sugarcreek, Jack of North Canton and Walter and Jim, both of Chagrin Falls.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Community Christian Church with Pastor Roger Zimmerman presiding. Private burial will be at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.
