Merlin Raye Allen was the son of Alden and Eleanor Allen. He was inducted in the U.S. Marine Corps in late October 1965. He was trained as a radio operator and joined Team Striker of the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division in early 1967. He was one of five Marines killed after their aircraft was hit by small arms and automatic weapons fire on June 30, 1967 in Thua Thien Province in Vietnam. The survivors of the crash were rescued, but the bodies of those killed could not be recovered at that time. LCPL Allen's remains were recovered in 2012 and returned to his family for burial in Wisconsin. In 2017, additional remains were recovered including those of three previously unrecovered victims of the crash. On Sept 27, 2018 those remains, including some belonging to LCPL Allen will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
