During the Civil War, Henry served as a Private in Company I, 2nd Vermont Infantry. He mustered in on October 18, 1861, and died at Camp Griffin, Virginia the same year.

The Voice Among the Mountains (Ludlow, Vermont) December 13, 1861: "Henry Lovejoy member of the 2nd Vermont, died in camp at Washington last week -- his body was brought home for interment, reached here on Monday. The men of Capt. Fullam's company, of which he was a member, contributed the requisite sum for defraying the expense of bringing the body home."
