Bennett - Floyd ‘Vernon’ Bennett, age 85, of Macclenny, Florida passed away September 18, 2018 at Acosta-Rua Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Taylor, Florida on May 15, 1933 to Floyd Bennett and Belle Rhoden Bennett. Vernon was a retired Army Sergeant Major with a 23-year career. Vernon married the love of his life, Linda Conant of Ripley, WV, and they have been happily married for 59 years. After retirement he moved back to his beloved Baker County and bought Bennett’s Tire and serviced the people of Baker County for 19 years. He served as City Commissioner from 1987-2015 with 28 years of outstanding service to the people of Macclenny. Vernon also served as a deacon for 28 years at Glen Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and was a fishing guide at Bieneville Plantation from 1997-2012. For years Vernon taught many generations of men and women to love to fish. But most of all he was an even greater fisher of men for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Vernon is survived by his beautiful and loving wife, Linda Bennett of Macclenny, FL; three children, Donna (Derrell) Monds, Bruce (Charlotte) Bennett, and Amy (Doug) Richardson all of Macclenny, FL; five grandchildren, Sheena Monds of Chattanooga, TN, Foster (Kate) Bennett of Macclenny, FL, Lindsay (Mike) Leonard of Macclenny, FL, Ally Richardson of Macclenny, FL, and Kade Richardson of Macclenny, FL; great grandchildren, Max Leonard and Ava Leonard; sisters, Dorothy (Don) Odnell, Sharon Crews, and Connie (Jim) Knabb; brothers, Tom (Juanelle) Bennett, Greg (Patricia) Bennett, Jeffrey (Shelly) Bennett, and Joey Bennett.

A Celebration of Vernon’s life will be held on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Baptist Church of Glen St. Mary with Dr. Chas Rowland officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Jacksonville National Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the church. The arrangements are under the care and direction of V.
