ELGIN - Eugene "Gene" James McDonald, 96, of Elgin, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Libertyville Manor. He was born on June 18, 1922 in Sioux City, IA the youngest of four children. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, then was called back to serve in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was in the officer training program where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. Gene received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now known as Iowa State University in Ames, IA in 1947. He received his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH in 1956. Gene was the Vice President of the Elgin Watch Company from 1959-1968 when the company discontinued their manufacturing in the United States. He then worked for Bell & Howell in Chicago from 1968-1979 and then Lightolier in Elgin from 1979-1987 where he was in charge of manufacturing engineering. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary L. McDonald, in 2014. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elgin, 400 Fulton St., Elgin, IL 60120. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday morning at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of mass.
