LAST RITES HELD FOR ESHELMAN - More Than 400 Persons Pay Last Respects To Prominent Centerville Churchman

Funeral services for Rev. Singleton Cloud Eshelman, 55, well known Klickitat churchman and farmer who died last Saturday, Jan. 22 at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Yakima, were held from the Christian church in Centerville Monday afternoon. More than 400 friends and neighbors of the Reverend Eshelman attended the services held in the same church he had served as pastor for the past 16 years.

Reverend Eshelman's death came as a distinct shock to the community. Apparently in good health he had entered the Yakima hospital for observation early last week.

Pioneer family

Reverend Eshelman was born at Centerville Nov. 30, 1882. His parents were Jefferson and Rosa Eshelman, members of a prominent pioneer family in Klickitat. He attended common schools in Centerville, the Klickitat Academy in Goldendale and the Eugene (Oregon) Bible school.

Since 1922 Reverend Eshelman had served as pastor for the Centerville Church of Christ. During the 16 years as pastor of the Centerville church he established himself as one of the county's leading churchmen.

Prominent leader

Most of his life of a member of the Centerville Grange, Reverend Eshelman served several terms as master of the farmers' organization. He was active in community affairs and for a number of years was a member of the Centerville school board. In recent years Reverend Eshelman was prominent in taxpayers organizations and served as the Farm Supervisor of the local Soil Conservation program.

During virtually his entire life he lived on the Eshelman wheat farm south of Centerville. He is survived by his widow Emma E., four sons, Harold, of Husum; Alvin, Wayne and Lemoin, all of Centerville; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Dooley and Mrs. Mertie Kelly; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Wayne Eshelman and Mrs. Lemoin Eshelman; and two grand-children, Wayne Lee and Mary Katherine.

Reverend Eshelman was buried in the Grange cemetery at Centerville. Rev. C.E. Hanes, of the Goldendale Baptist church conducted in the funeral services.
