Paul served as a Seaman First Class and a crew member of the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Bennington (CVA-20) during the Korean Conflict.

While cruising in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island a launching catapult exploded killing him and 101 fellow crewmen.

He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
