Dr. Alfred Carter was the first known son of Thomas and Jane Carter. He was born on 22 November 1833 in South Carolina, indicating that Thomas and Jane had left Tennessee between 1830 and 1833. "Uncle Alf" married Margaret Alta Roden on 31 August 1853 in Conway County, Arkansas. A story has been printed about Alf and Margaret's marriage that doesn't exactly match the facts. It was reported that they met "while on the wagon train and fell in love in Memphis, marrying before they crossed the river." This is inaccurate in that Conway County marriage records document their marriage at least four years after the Carters are known to have arrived in the area.
Alf and Margaret had nine known children:
1) Thomas A. who married first Nancy Ann Beaver and second Sallie Sanson
2) Sarah Jane who married Robert H. Naylor
3) John W.
4) Mary E. who married John Delin Sims
5) William T. who married Sue Edna Roden
6) James Solomon who married Ida Caldonia "Dona" Robertson
7) George P. who married Emma Teagle
8) Nancy R.
9) Jesse M.
Alf served in Company "I", 36th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate army during the Civil War. After he returned home, he followed the practice of medicine. He was registered as a physician and surgeon in Faulkner County on 1 July 1881. He continued this practice until his death on 30 August 1908.
