Son of Arthur and Katherine Howell. A farmer by profession, he enlisted aged 18 in March 1916 as a private (Regimental No 5994) and embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 12th August 1916. He served with the 10th Battalion, 19th Reinforcements, Australian Imperial Force, receiving the British War Medal and Victory Medal, and returned to Australia on 15th April 1918. He died at the Keswick Military Hospital, Adelaide.
