A graduate of Ohio State with a degree in pharmacy, he received his masters degree in public health from the university of Michigan. He was a doctor of veterinary medicine. In 1954 he came to Mercersburg as field representative for Sealtest, and later worked as pharmacist in Hagerstown and Chambersburg. A retired major of the U.S. Army, he had served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the administrative board. He was also a member of the Nedacacis F&AM Lodge 597, the Corinthian Chapter 393 Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite and the Aladdin Shrine, all of Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of the National Sojourners of Chicago.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Herron McClarren; three brothers, Howard McClarren, Clearwater, Fl.; Dr. Robert R. McClarren, Columbus; and Bruce McClarren, Wauseon, Ohio.
Services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Mercersburg. Burial was at Union Cemetery in Columbus.
