Clyde was born in Callaway County Mo. He worked as a railway yard Clerk for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Kansas City. Clyde and Emmett Estill Vaughn were nicknamed Jack and Bill by their father John Marcellus Vaughn who was quite the jokester and gave them these nicknames for a pair of mules he owned, Jack and Bill, the name stuck
