PRE. Joseph GASCHO was born in Woodford Co., Ill., Dec. 14, 1841, died near Milford, Seward Co., Neb., Feb. 3, 1902, aged 60 years, 1 month and 20 days. He was married in 1868 to Maria Burkey, with whom he lived in happy matrimony for 33 years, 10 months and 21 days. To this union were born seven sons and five daughters, two sons preceding him in death. He united with the Amish Mennonite church. In 1864 he moved to Livingston County, Ill. where he was ordained to the ministry for the Gridley Prairie congregation (now Waldo Mennoite) in 1872. In January 1878, the family moved to near West Mills in Seward County, Nebraska, where he soon joined new Fairview Amish Mennonite Church located near Milford. Joseph travelled extensively to other states, at one time with Mennonite Evangelist J.S. Coffman. He served as a minister of the gospel in the congregation for 25 years and occasionally preached for smaller scattered Amish-Mennonite congregations in Western Nabraska. His earnest admonitions to follow Jesus will not soon be forgotten. His affliction was cancer in the face. He suffered greatly, but patiently, and when it became evident that the malady was incurable he was resigned and said, "God's will be done." When the end drew near he called to his side his beloved companion who had so loyally and lovingly ministered to his needs and who had for so many years shared with him the joys and sorrows of life, and earnestly admonished her to remain faithful unto the Lord. Funeral services were conducted at the house by Nicholas Roth, of Milford, Neb., and at the M. H., by Chr. Rediger, of Hamilton, Neb., and P. P. Hershberger and Chr. Beller, of Shickley, Neb. His face was so badly disfigured at the time of his death, his body could not be shown at the fueral. May the God of all comfort sustain the bereaved ones in their affliction.
