CASTLETON Cathy M. Bell, 57, of Castleton died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family Monday, September 10, 2018. Born on February 13, 1961, in Hudson, she was the daughter of Art and Connie (Williams) Alger. Cathy enjoyed her childhood and was very close to her entire extended family who gave her the nickname "Pickle" because she used to love eating her grandfather's homemade pickles. She was a 1979 graduate of Ichabod Crane High School and shortly after met and married her husband Timothy, who at the time was in the Navy, and traveled to multiple states until they settled down in the Capital Region and started a family. Cathy's main focus in life was raising her children and taking care of her family and friends by making sacrifices and going without in order to help others. She was a Thyroid cancer survivor in 2008 and declared cancer-free in 2017 only to find out a few months later that she had a rare sarcoma cancerous tumor. After an unsuccessful surgery and aggressive chemotherapy, she still had hope that at some point these therapies would help her manage her condition. During this difficult battle, Cathy found great joy and got her strength from family and friends as well as with pictures and visits from her great-nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, Timothy L. Bell; her son, Gary R. Bell of New York City; her daughter, Chelsea L. Bell of Castleton; two sisters, Lisa Alger of Valatie and Brenda Hammond of Averill Park; a brother, Art Alger Jr. of Chatham, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie, with Reverend Nick Becker officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Valatie.
