James Whittum was the son of Ebenezer Whittum and Clarissa (Tyler) Whittum. He married Abigail W. "Abby" Fowle about 1845. She was the daughter of Jonathan Fowle and Permelia (Hodgdon) Fowle. He worked as a Leather Currier in Woolwich, Maine. They were the parents of five known children: Clara Permelia; Abigail Ella "Abby"; Lizzie Sarah; Jane Wright "Jennie" and James Franklin Whittum. He died of heart failure at the age of 73.
