Actor. A native of New York, New York, Calloway is best remembered for his role as shopkeeper 'David Robinson' on the long-running PBS (Public Broadcasting Station) children's program, "Sesame Street" from 1971 to 1989. He also appeared in several of the show's apecials including, "Christmas Eve On Sesame Street" (1978), "A Special Sesame Street Christmas" (1978), "Sesame Street Special" (1988), "Sesame Street: 20 And Still Counting" (1989), and Sesame Street Presents: The Street We Live On" (2004), released several years after his death. Also a noted theatre actor, Calloway was a member of the 1960s Starlight Theatre in San Francisco, California, a member of the Lincoln Center Repertory Company (for them he appeared in plays, "Saint Joan" and "Cyrano de Bergerac"), performed at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, (for them he appeared in plays, "The Three Musketeers" and "A Midsummer's Night Dream"), and on Broadway he was actor/dancer Ben Vereen's understudy for the play, "Pippin." He also appeared as 'Calvin' in the 1972 controversial film, "Together For Days." The film which focused on the relationship between a White woman and a Black radical activist in the 1970s, also starred Clifton Davis and a up and coming young actor named Samuel L. Jackson.
