WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Brock, 89, transitioned to her heavenly home on August 3, 2018 after a long battle of illness. Her devotion to the family and firm belief in God supported Ruth in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. Ruth was born to the late Mr. James Robert Ford Sr. and Mrs. Alver Crone Ford of North Carolina. She was immersed in the Christian community that would be her lifelong support from an early age. She was educated in the WSFCS and also retired from WSFCS. Ruth was blessed with a large and loving family. She married the late Mr. Luther Green Brock Sr. of Mocksville, North Carolina and raised five children with patience, discipline and humility. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of the gospels. Ruth was an educator at heart, and learned the art of calligraphy writing, displaying her talent in church newsletter, The Cross/Flame. She was kind, soft-spoken, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. She is and will be dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with her creator. Ruth is survived by five children: Mr. James Brock (Mattie) of Kernersville, N.C., Ms. Barbara King (Ronnie Moore), Mrs. Gwendoly Barkley (John) Mr. Luther Brock (Rhonda), Ms. Carolyn Brock, all of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; three brothers: Mr. Henry Lee Eaton (Sarah) of Newark, New Jersey, Mr. Alvin Eaton and Mr. Stanley Vance of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, nine grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, two goddaughters, Alwilda Baldwin, Faye Nyan and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding her in death;: Mr. James Robert Ford (brother), Mr. Reginald Brock (grandson), Mrs. Mary Jackson (goddaughter) and Ms. Debbie Williams (god-granddaughter). Ruth was an active member of Saints Home United Methodist Church where she had served on the Senior and Gospel Choirs, Chairperson of the Council on Ministries, along with several other auxiliaries. She was a certified lay speaker in the Western Conference and held office on the local, district and conference levels, which enabled her to travel to many parts of the country. She was a member of Handel's Messiah Choir and several local choirs throughtout the city, secretary of the local AARP, vice president of the District V.N.C., Association of Senior Citizens, vice president of M.L. King, Jr. and Carl Russell branch of the N.C. Association of Senior Citizens, chaplain of Winston-Salem Unit 128 of American Legion Auxiliary, T.O.P.S, Claude Rucker Birthday Club. With heartfelt thanks, the family would like to express our utmost gratitude for the care rendered by Meals on Wheels, Advance Home Care, Senior Services, Saint Home United Methodist Church, Saint Andrews United Methodist Church. Homegoing service will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 12 noon from Saint Home United Methodist Church; the family will receive friends at 11:30 at the church. The remains may be viewed today from 2 pm until 6 pm at Douthit's. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
