Noted civil rights activist who participated in the Freedom Rides and the historic sit-ins that desegregated Nashville's lunch counters in 1960. Walker was a graduate of the second integrated class of Father Ryan High School. He attended Fisk University, then served in the military before attending Columbia University in New York. Walker was among the group of black college students, including fellow Fisk alumni US Rep. John Lewis, D-GA, and Diane Nash, who led protests throughout the region. At 19 years old, as a Fisk University student, Walker rode a Trailways bus as part of the May 24, 1961 Freedom Ride from Montgomery, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi. He was arrested on 24 May 1961 in Jackson for his participation. A member of the Nashville Student Rights Movement, Walker was committed to nonviolence as taught by the Rev. James Lawson.
