Statesman, Third Prime Minister of Tunisia. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was elected to the Tunisian Constituent Assembly in 1956 and then served as Tunisian Deputy Prime Minister from April 15, 1956 to July 29, 1957. He was Tunisian Secretary of State for Defense from January 29, 1968 to April 12, 1968 and July 29, 1957 to June 24, 1966. He also served as Tunisian Secretary of State for Finance from August 2, 1960 to October 4, 1960 and September 30, 1958 to December 30, 1958. He is best remembered as a militant for independence from France and one of the builders of modern Tunisia, helping to found the national army. After leaving as prime minister, he continued to serve Tunisia leading international missions on behalf of the Arab League.
