Member of Masonic Lodge. Member of the J.A. Bertsch & Son Hardware Company business for 40 years. Republican county Chairman and Treasurer for Union County Tuberculosis Association. Descendent of one of the county's oldest pioneer families and was of Quaker ancestry.

Son Hugh survives of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister Mrs. Alberta Bertsch of Liberty and a brother Hollis Maxwell of near Salem, IN.

Leo was a member of the Sigma Chi Alpha Fraternity at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, graduating in 1900.
