BELLVILLE: Some people say family is defined as a group of people who are related to each other, but Craig Roberts knew that family is more than that. Craig’s family were those who were bonded to him through meaningful connection, his nuclear family, his fire family, his fair family, and his community family all were linked to Craig through shared experiences.
Victor Craig Roberts passed away from his earthly families in his home Saturday morning, September 8, 2018 following a brave battle with ALS. He was 63.
Born in Mansfield, September 16, 1954 to Rupert “Vic” and Della Jane (Smith) Roberts, Craig was a lifelong resident and constant in the Clear Fork Valley.
A 1973 graduate of Clear Fork High School, Craig wore #43 for the varsity football team and was also very active with choir and the Artisans. In fact, music is what drew Craig to Pamela Norris. As a senior with the male lead in the musical Oklahoma, he convinced the director to audition Pam for the female lead so he could make his move. Apparently Craig’s scheme worked, because the two were never apart from that day forward, they married a year later on August 11, 1974, just after Pam graduated high school. Together they shared a love of music, singing duets at weddings and church events. Their bond of love, friendship and playfulness has been a model marriage for their family.
Craig attended Ohio University and West Virginia University. He returned to Bellville running his family furniture shop in Butler during the early 80s as well as Lifer Excavation. Most notably Craig served his Bellville family in the sewer department, having ran the department as Superintendent. Craig loved helping his community family and forged a deep bond with the village officials and customers alike. He retired in 2013 from the Lexington Sewer Department as Superintendent.
As the son of a firefighter, Craig loved his department family. Since February of 1976 Craig was a staple of the Bellville-Jefferson Fire Department. He dedicated countless hours as a first responder in the Bellville community, assuring those in crisis he was there to help. He was responsible for the construction of the office in the old station and was often the man to lead his brothers in honoring their own at funerals and organizing parades and always giving his time for fundraisers and boot campaigns to help Bellville families. Craig was instrumental in the planning of the current Bellville Station and served the department as Chief from 2006-2017.
Craig Roberts has never missed a street fair until 2018. A member of the Bellville Street Fair Board family, Craig served from 1989 to present. His responsibility as Entertainment Director was quite a task but a duty he did with pride. He loved the fair and everything it stands for in the hearts of everyone in Bellville.
Together, Pam and Craig spent nearly a decade supporting the Clear Fork Music Boosters. From hauling the equipment trailer and organizing the concession stand, he volunteered even the few years when Lindsay and Emily were not participating.
A resourceful carpenter, plumber and handy man, Craig and Pam refurbished their historic Bellville home where they raised their family the past 40 years. He took great pride in the property as one of the most beautiful in the village. An outdoorsman, Craig loved fishing with his dad and annual trips to Canada at North Wind Lake. A little tender hearted for hunting, he did get one deer, but hiking and backpacking were more Craig’s style. Making the bottom of the Grand Canyon three times was plenty, and he fondly remembered hiking parts of the Appalachian Trail through West Virginia, Tennessee and the Smokies.
Craig was a relentless WVU fan sharing many trips to Morgantown to games singing to the tune of John Denver’s Country Roads. Crafty and creative he designed a greenhouse for Pam, and made many projects like fire extinguisher windchimes, wine bottle trees and stained glass.
A devoted father, Craig passed to both of his girls, the love of music, resourcefulness, confidence, acceptance and the biggest life lesson of all: that nothing comes before family and to never wait to do the things you love or to tell dear ones how much you love them.
All of Craig’s many families will remember his bright smile and contagious laughter.
In addition to his love and soul mate Pam, Craig is survived by two daughters Lindsay and Laura Roberts of Bellville, Emily and Jeff McDonald of Medina; three precious grandsons who called him “Opa” Blaze Victor Roberts, Ledger Cruz Roberts, and Owen Shepard McDonald; a brother Ronald and Jeanie Roberts of Bellville; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Roger and Joyce Norris, Laurie and Russ Barr, and Melodie and Jeff Rhea; numerous nieces and nephews, and a community of family.
Craig was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call Tuesday, September 11, 2018 from 2 pm to 7 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral service honoring the life of Victor Craig Roberts will be held at 11 am Wednesday. Craig’s cousin, Pastor Kevin Rush will officiate. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
