William A. Stender, 84, of Chatfield a retired machinist, died Sunday, November 13, 1988, at Chosen Valley Care Center, where he had lived since 1985.

He was born Oct. 22, 1904, in rural Wykoff, grew up in that area and attended parochial school in Wykoff. He farmed for a time on the family farm, then moved to western Minnesota, where he was a trucker until moving to the Chatfield area in 1950. He worked as a machinist for Hervey Implement Co. & Bernard Co. in the Chatfield area. On March 14, 1953, he married Agnes Blumers Battey in Chatfield. He was an avid vegetable gardener.

Survivors include is wife; a stepson, Donald Battey of Austin, Texas; three step grandchildren; two step great-grandsons; four brothers, Louis, August and Ray, all of Wykoff, and John of Hastins; and three sisters, Frances (Mrs. John) Welter of Mesa, Ariz., Meta (Mrs. Herman) Bitker of Lake Crystal, Minn., and Marcella (Mrs. Milland) Paulson of Austin, Minn. A brother and six sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral was at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chatfield with the Rev. Clark A. Jaeger officiating. Spring Burial will be in the Chatfield Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield.
