Obituary for Richard "Dick" Herndon

Richard Leroy Herndon 80, of San Angelo died Friday September 7, 2018.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Sunday September 9, at Harper Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am Monday at Glen Meadows Baptist Church with Rev. Mack Roller officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Dick Herndon was born February 17, 1938 in Bradenton, Florida to Roy and Fannie Rich Herndon. Richard married Sheila Sanders August 5, 1960 in San Antonio.

He served in the United States Air Force for twenty years retiring as a Master Sergeant. During his time of service he was stationed in Japan, the Phillipines, Italy and San Angelo making many lifelong friends along the way and traveling extensively across Europe. After retiring to San Angelo, he worked in communications with GTE for fifteen years, volunteered for REACT and the San Angelo Citizen's Police Academy where he was a member of the first class of volunteers. He took up woodworking, went hunting with his brother and sons, and kept traveling.

He was a member of Glen Meadows Baptist Church. Richard's greatest pleasure, however, was loving his family. He was a true gentle man that adored his wife, was a wonderful example as a husband, father and grandfather to all who knew him. His passing will leave a void that can never be filled in those he loved.

Survivors include his wife Sheila Herndon, two sons Russell (Rusty) Herndon and his wife Sue, of Christoval, Randall (Randy) Herndon and his wife Lauri of San Angelo, four grandchildren Alyse Nicole Herndon, Richard Lance Herndon and wife Tori, Samantha Raschele Herndon, Helen Ruth Herndon, a great grandson Russell Luke Herndon, a sister Shirley Morton and husband Jim of St. Petersburg Flordia, a brother James (Jimmy) Herndon and wife Betty Ann of Plant City, Florida. Special gratitude to Esther Flores whose continious love and care lifted our entire family.

Pallbearers are: Lance Herndon, Matthew Grimm, Patrick Brody, Todd Dornhecker, Howard Miller, Harley Loso, Tom Jones, and Scott Byrd.
