Joanne Thomas (also known as Grandma Jo) was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on September 4, 2018. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 23, 1949 and was the oldest of eleven children born to Marion and Eugene Benecke.
Joanne married the love of her life John Thomas on June 15, 1968. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their marriage was blessed with 5 children, 25 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
During their lifetime together, they lived in Minot, North Dakota and more recently moved to Meridian, Idaho. Upon their retirement, they enjoyed traveling south for winters spending time in both Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Nettles Island, Florida. Joanne loved the ocean and spent countless hours combing the beach and collecting seashells and sea glass.
Joanne served as Business Administrator at Bell School in Minot, ND for 32 years. She was passionate about serving others and did so through various volunteer activities including food pantries, soup kitchens, and a variety of church ministries.
Joanne demonstrated devotion, compassion, and selflessness in how she lived her life. She was a very caring and kindhearted person. Not only did she show the purest of love to her family, but also to humanity. She loved all people, especially those that needed it most.
Her faith and love for the Lord were evident in the way she lived her life. She accepted His sovereign will in all things. Joanne provided her family and friends an example of living in a Christ-like way. She did all of this with a beautiful smile on her face, even in the midst of challenge. Joanne always encouraged, loved, and never condemned.
She is survived by her husband, John; her children Kris (Chuck), John (Patty), Heather (Grant), Nicki (Robert), and Michael (Susan); her grandchildren Alesha (Jesse), Amanda, Rebecca, Emma, Ava, Taylor (Gaant), Tori, Shea, Nolan, Samantha, Jadyn, Challis, Luke, Carli, Brady, Jacob, Seth, Jessica, Savannah, Rylee, Ryan, Sophie, Chloe, and Tristan; her great-grandchildren Bella, Caleb, Rylan, and Braylee; sisters Patty Ann (Jeff), Roseann (Bob), Mary Ann (Tommy), Sue (Mick), Annie (Ron); brothers Frank (Ali), Mike (Laura), Woody; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gene, her brother Bill, and her granddaughter Gabrielle.
